  • Xanga: It's medieval history.

Before Myspace and Facebook were popular, us preteens at the time depended on Xanga as our communication tool. It was where we posted the events that happened in our day, a rant about someone we don't like, or expressed our deep feelings for things. But why is it dead now?

Simply because teens have changed. They need to have things that are better, newer, faster, more popular. It's always about being in the loop. When I was 13 years old, my cousin signed me up for Myspace. My reaction? "What is this crap." Who knew that less than a year later, I would no longer be blogging my thoughts on Xanga, but spending countless hours on Myspace. Then popped up Facebook. Some college student somewhere became super famous because of his online community called "facebook". And of course, we flocked to this site because it was new and the thing.

I used to sit in History 104 in my freshman year of college reading Xanga posts on my phone or computer. They kept me entertained because of what people wrote. Yet, I still find myself sitting on Facebook for hours, waiting for a new comment or for someone to sign on to chat with. As I type this now, I continue my conversation with a friend from high school on the highly addictive site.

Xanga died. Its a fact we face. Its an underground site again. When people are asked "Hey remember Xanga?", it's like they're asking you, "Hey remember the 90s?" Just like the time period, Xanga is full of intersting people, weird things, and for sure not low on people stuck in the past.
